In the shoes of… Sheffield’s No.1 Ghost Tour Guide

Darren Johnson-Smith who goes by Mr P. Dreadful has spent the last decade hunting ghosts in Sheffield.

Darren, 36, from Doncaster was made redundant from his job as a music journalist ten years ago.

Whilst at the jobcentre he made a joke about being a Ghost Tour Guide. Now, ten years on, his tours run three times a week throughout the year.

“I didn’t think we’d make it two years let alone ten. It’s incredible.”

As a clairvoyant, Darren is very aware of the ghosts around Sheffield and says that even people on the tours have seen the odd ghost.

“I’ve been able to see ghosts since I was a child. I actually thought everyone could see them.”

Darren’s tours consist of eight different ghost stories, which he thoroughly researches before telling the tale to the public.

To confirm a ghost sighting he needs to have least three witnesses all telling a similar recollection. Then he goes to Sheffield’s Central Library to find out if the story matches the era and the surroundings.

His ghost walks start at City Hall at 7pm every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.

His ghost walks start at City Hall at 7pm every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. He says his Monday tour is suitable for children, the Wednesday tour is gruesome and over 16s can attend, and on Thursday he does a mixture of both.

In fact, the Wednesday tour is so horrifying he says he’s had people fainting and asking him to tone down the stories.

“The other day four grown men who told me there was just too much gore for their taste.”
